It’s an event its makers are “extremely proud” to announce. The Algarve’s first foreign language feature film, The Right Juice, has been chosen from thousands of entrants to have its world premiere at the prestigious Atlanta Film Festival, in Georgia, this week.

The tongue-in-cheek dramatic comedy, financed by Portuguese-based companies and local people as well as a crowd-funding initiative, is scheduled for screening on Sunday at 1.45pm US time.

For those who haven’t yet heard about it, The Right Juice is a brave attempt at promoting Portugal for all the right reasons. Director Kristjan Knigge said at the outset that the low-budget independent film was designed to help boost the Algarve as a tourist destination, and showcase Portugal’s potential as a film location.

“The Alentejo can be made to look like Africa; Lisbon like Paris; interior villages can look like locations from Eastern Europe,” he told us when the film started shooting two years ago.

An American Coca Cola advert made by the film’s producer BJ Boulter in the 90s managed to portray “six countries, including India and Scotland, all shot within 25kms of Portimão! It’s a marvellous country for maximum impact and minimum cost – which is just what this film is all about,” said Knigge.

The screening in Atlanta will also be a perfect opportunity to sound out potential worldwide distributors.

Knigge will be flying to Atlanta with assistant director Karen Radzikowski, and the pair will be available for a question and answer session after the screening.

The film - shown privately in the Algarve a few weeks ago - centres on a young investment banker who arrives in the Algarve to grow oranges and ends up striking oil.

It is a wonderful mixture of professional actors: Mark Killeen (300: Rise of an Empire, Game of Thrones), Lúcia Moniz (Love Actually), Ellie Chidzey (Dungeons & Dragons) and Miguel Damião (from the Portuguese soap ‘Maternidade’), as well as gifted amateurs, like Algarve lighting supremo Beau McClellan, and afpop boss Michael Reeve - and it presents a number of well-known Algarve landmarks and businesses, particularly Guia’s Zoomarine and the luxury resort Vila Vita Parc.
