Since the fires started last Friday, local company Água de Monchique has been forced to suspend business, losing an estimated €70,000 per day.

The company’s president Vítor Gonçalves has been talking to journalists, explaining that aside from the council, Água de Monchique is one of the largest employers in the area.

But it now cannot fill national or international orders as its bottle of highly prized water remain stacked on pallets waiting for the ‘all clear’ when roads are reopened and business can return to normal.

Monchique water is particularly prized because of its high PH value (alkaline).

It is often ‘prescribed’ by doctors for patients with issues resulting from too much acidity.
