Desperate images are being broadcast this morning as serious fires have once more returned to blight the north and centre of the country.

With Algarve residents in certain areas waking up to “the smell of smoke”, the reality is that this far today the region is free of any major incidents.

The smell was simply the result of smoke being blown south, explains firewatch Facebook page Alerta do Incéndio Florestal which keeps the Algarve up to date with situations via regular posts.

For now, major fires are raging in Abrantes (threatening homes and communities) and Salvaterra de Magos (central Portugal), as well as Tábua, Castelo Branco and Vila Real (the north).

Hundreds of firefighters are involved, backed by helicopters, planes and vehicles.

National television reporters are on the ground, and images are being broadcast through the day.
