“Stay away from cliffs” is the message in Albufeira’s latest awareness campaign which urges beachgoers to avoid the base of cliffs to seek refuge from the sun and wind.

The initiative is entitled ‘Arribas não são opção! Escolha a sombra mais segura’ (Cliffs are not an option! Choose a safer shade) and will see members of the local council and civil protection services handing out pamphlets, available in English and Portuguese, to beachgoers at Albufeira beaches until August 31.

The pamphlets advise beachgoers to avoid setting up camp near unstable areas, respect all warning signs, choose beaches with lifeguards and seek shade away from cliffs.

This has become a central issue for the local authority ever since a family of five was killed by falling rocks on Albufeira’s Maria Luísa beach in August 2009.

This particular beach has remained a particular black spot for rockfalls despite concerted efforts by authorities to carry out controlled demolitions to keep the cliffs from becoming too unstable (click here).

“Albufeira is chosen by national and foreign tourists thanks to the beauty and environmental quality of its coastal area,” said Albufeira mayor José Carlos Rolo in a press release.

“However, it is also important to ensure that people can enjoy our beaches safely. One of the measures to achieve this involves raising awareness among beachgoers about the dangers of cliffs,” he added.

The initiative is organised by Albufeira council, Portugal’s maritime authority (AMN), maritime police and the association of Albufeira lifeguards (ANSA).
