Around 3,500 people – “the biggest turnout ever” – descended on Albufeira’s Pine Cliffs Resort on Saturday, August 5 for a night of celebration to the music of one of the world’s most successful reggae and pop bands, UB40.

The British band, known for number one hit singles such as “Red, Red Wine”, “Can’t Help Falling in Love” and “I Got You Babe”, was chosen as this year’s headline performers to mark the resort’s 25th anniversary during their 20th Summer Gala.

The welcome reception kicked off with a trio of DJ, saxophonist and singer who entertained the guests between canapés and champagne cocktails on the green.

As the hundreds of guests sat down in front of the stage for a sumptuous meal under a near full moon, entertainers Sister G weaved their way through the tables warming up the guests for the main act.

Well-known Portuguese radio presenter Vanda Miranda from M80 radio station then took to the stage to welcome everyone to the Summer Gala.

She was joined by Thomas Schoen, complex general manager at Pine Cliffs, who said: “Pine Cliffs is more than a resort; it is a lifestyle. For 25 years it has contributed to the Algarve’s exceptional quality of life.”

Carlos Leal, general manager at United Investments Portugal, which owns Pine Cliffs, added: “The Summer Gala has always been an important event for us, but this year it is even more special as we celebrate a quarter of a century. We are delighted to have welcomed to our party some of the people who have supported us during this journey and who have helped make Pine Cliffs one of the top luxury resorts in Portugal and Europe.”

Declaring a love for Portuguese wine in an interview with TVi channel prior to the concert, UB40 bandmates Ali, Astro and Mickey knew just how to end their performance in style and “memories won’t go” for the fans who went wild when the band played the popular 1983 hit ‘Red, Red Wine’.

With a solid career, having sold over 70 million records, and vibrant musical style admired by several generations, UB40 were just perfect to mark this milestone and get everyone in the right mood for the after-party at the nearby Yazuka Algarve.

The Pine Cliffs Summer Gala has previously featured stars such as Joe Cocker, George Benson, Bryan Ferry, Lionel Richie, Michael Bolton, Kool & The Gang and more recently Ne-Yo, Leona Lewis and Aloe Blacc.
