Africa has been chosen as the theme for this year’s candlelit market in Lagoa which will take place between Thursday, July 5 and Sunday, July 8.

Entitled ‘Mercado de Culturas ... à Luz das Velas’, the market has built up a reputation as one of the Algarve’s most atmospheric summertime events.

For four days between 7pm and 1am, the town’s streets will be decorated with thousands of candles which will depict 40 ethnic and religious African symbols.

There will also be concerts, dance performances, food, stalls manned by around 60 craftspeople lining the streets and art exhibitions themed around Africa.

The list of musical performers includes Kilema (Madagascar), Muhsilwan (Sudan, Morocco and Guinea), Aboubacar Sylla & Doudou Ngm (Guinea and Senegal), Yeliké & Gassim Camara (Guinea), Zé Manel Martins Quarteto (Angola) and Cherif Bacisko (Guinea-Bissau).

DJ Ahmed Alsudani will put on a show every night and visitors will also be able to enjoy performances by percussionists from Senegal, Guinea, Ivory Coast and Mali.

There will also be African food to enjoy at the São José convent, while gastronomic workshops led by Angolan chef Carla Costa will take place at the municipal market.

More information will be posted on the event’s official Facebook page.
