Organisers are celebrating an all-round “record-breaking” edition of the Portuguese Wine Show, held last weekend at Albufeira’s EMA exhibition hall.

“Our goals were achieved. We broke all records, both in terms of winemakers (around 90) and visitors (over 9,000),” said Carlos Oliveira from the Confraria do Bacchus de Albufeira.

Feedback from exhibitors was also “very positive” and the plan is to take the event one step further next year.

“We want to have even more winemakers and also offer more in terms of gastronomy,” said Oliveira, urging the Algarve’s hotel sector to “pay more attention to the show” as there are many quality winemakers to discover.

“This is an opportunity we are giving hotels and they should use it to not commit the mistake of always offering their clients the same wines. They should diversify their brands,” he said.

Winemakers from across Portugal were also full of positivity.

“I’ve been showcasing my wines at this fair since I found out about it and every year I have improved my sales in the Algarve. I plan to keep coming here and gaining more clients,” said Filipe Brás, a representative for Douro’s 100 Hectares wines.

“With this show, we are able to easily reach many thousands of people who can buy our wines and take them home, which is also a form of marketing,” said Anthony Doody from the Alentejo’s Herdade da Maruteira.

As he explained: “It’s not just about the people who go to the show, but also those who will taste the wines because of them.”

The wine show will return again next year between April 28 and 30.
