The annual Portuguese Wine Show, held between April 27 and 30 at Albufeira’s EMA exhibition hall, welcomed an “unprecedented” number of visitors and wine producers.

Organisers estimate that around 15,000 people had the chance to taste over 1,000 wines from the 120 wine producers in attendance.

The event is considered one of the most prestigious wine shows in the country, welcoming more and more people every year.

“This is a hugely successful show that the town hall has supported since the first edition,” said Albufeira mayor José Carlos Rolo.

“Wine accounts for a large portion of national exports and, in the Algarve, wine combines well with the ‘sun and sea’ way of life,” he added.

Carlos Oliveira from organisers Confraria do Bacchus de Albufeira thanked all participating producers for believing in the show and stressed that Albufeira welcomes thousands of people each year keen to discover the best Portugal has to offer.

Besides the wine tasting opportunities, the event also showcased several regional products from smoked chorizo and olive oil to local sweets and other mouth-watering creations made by local chefs.

Miguel Freitas, Secretary of State for Forests and Rural Development, was a special guest at the event. He praised the initiative for showcasing “one of the country’s greatest assets”.

“Wine is a great ambassador for Portugal. We are about to reach the one-billion-euro mark in wine exports, which shows that we have a dynamic wine sector which is able to respond to international demand,” he said.
