Algarve wines were promoted at the London Wine Fair, considered the most important wine event in the United Kingdom.

For the first time ever, the Algarve took part in the fair with its very own stand and was represented by 17 wine producers, many of whom were there personally to showcase some of their best creations.

Carlos Garcias, president of the Algarve wine commission (CVA), stressed how important it is for the region to promote its wines abroad and benefit from this exposure.

“The UK is the third most important European market for Portugal, and in the Algarve it is even more important due to its impact in the tourism sector,” he said.

“The London Wine Fair is unique because it focuses on trade. Visitors are professionals who work in the sector, be it at restaurants, wineries, distribution companies or supermarket chains,” Garcias added.

The wines that stood out the most, according to wine connoisseur Gilmar Brito who was a regular presence at the Algarve stand, were those made with the ‘Negra Mole’ grape variety.

The participation in the event was considered a success and the CVA says it is “expecting calls from the UK soon”.

The month of May was a busy one for Algarve wines which were entered into several competitions in Portugal and abroad.

Paxá Viognier 2017 white, from Paxá Wines in Silves, was awarded a silver medal at the Portugal Wine Competition, while Al-Ria Reserva 2016 red made by Casa Santos Lima received the coveted gold medal.

The Algarve was also represented at the famous Concours Mondial de Bruxelles wine competition which took place in Beijing, China, in May this year. Around 9,200 wines and champagnes from 48 countries were tested, with the Algarve bringing home five medals (four silver and one gold). Portugal was the fourth country to receive the most medals (324), after France, Spain and Italy.

Also last month, Marquês dos Vales Grace Vineyard 2012 red, from Quinta dos Vales in Estômbar, won the ‘Best Wine in the Algarve’ accolade in the Algarve Wine Competition, which took place in Silves.
