Faz Gostos: AWS dinner in the new private dining area

Members of the Algarve Wine Society met for dinner on Tuesday, November 7 at Restaurante Faz Gostos in the historic centre of Faro.

Faz Gostos has recently expanded into the adjoining building and created an atmospheric dining area, ideal for groups, in the original restaurant.

It was the first time the AWS had dined there, and it proved to be a special evening. The wines were supplied by Azamor, represented by Alison Luiz Gomes, half of an English/Portuguese couple who have been developing the winery since 2002 on land previously owned by Joaquim’s family.

Located near Vila Viçosa in the Alentejo, the winery produces relatively small quantities of high quality wines. Right from the start quality was the aim, so Alison’s first step was to study winemaking in Porto – definitely a good move, as the winery’s first vintage in 2003 won a gold medal in the Concours Mundial Bruxelles.

Determined not to lose focus, Alison has concentrated on perfecting a small range of red wines – but fortunately for the AWS, she was able to bring with her from the Alentejo her first venture into white wine production, Azamor Selected White. This proved to be a beautifully balanced, lightly oaked wine which was a popular choice to start the evening.

A menu of smoked duck starter followed by veal entrecôte with pepper sauce was paired with Azamor’s red wines, culminating with the flagship Petit Verdot and Icon d’Azamor – a wine produced only in exceptional years, to date just three times – a rare treat.

AWS president Gaynor Stapleton thanked Alison for enabling the society to sample “these truly memorable, beautifully crafted wines”. |
