It’s been a while since the Algarve Wine Society held a formal tasting of wines, and organiser Derek Lambert decided it was time to conduct one focusing solely on wines from the Algarve, which is becoming increasingly highly regarded as a region producing high quality wines. To add a twist to the evening, members had to decide the price of each wine from three different price options.

More than 60 members congregated in the dining room of the Dona Filipa Hotel, overlooking the pool, before tasting whites, reds and reservas in sets of three, enabling direct comparison between the wines. Some of the wines had an alcohol content of as much as 17%, reflecting high growing temperatures in the warm Algarve sunshine.

Despite the climatic challenges, the quality of Algarvian wines continues to improve and there were some fine single vineyard examples from the wineries of Helwigus Single Vineyard, Quinta da Penina, Quinta da Tor and Quinta do Miradouro.
As one of the producers pointed out, serving temperature is critical and his preference is to serve reds at around 16°C to fully appreciate the flavour of the wine.

Members continued to debate the merits of these wines over an excellent dinner of seafood soup, mushroom risotto with crispy duck and a buffet of various cheeses and desserts ably prepared and served by Dona Filipa’s staff.
