The Algarve continues to establish itself as a top destination for foodies, having received the award of ‘Best European Region in Tourism and Gastronomy’ at the Aurum Awards of the European Oenogastronomic Brotherhoods Council (CEUCO), held in Athens, Greece, last weekend.

Castro Marim’s Infante Panorâmico restaurant at Praia Verde was also awarded ‘Best European Restaurant’.

Algarve tourism chief João Fernandes says the accolades come at a time when the region is “strengthening food and wine tourism”.

“These awards bring us recognition and serve as a boost to continue preserving and valuing our gastronomic heritage,” Fernandes said, adding that the prizes were even more special as they were awarded by people who “share the same passion for food and wine as us”.

The Algarve tourism board says “the flavours and skills of Algarve cuisine have won over millions of people around the world”, and gastronomy has become one of the key selling points of the tourism sector.

Algarve Cooking Vacations, a project launched last year in a bid to turn the Algarve into a top destination for cooking holidays by creating food and wine routes, has already received international praise.

Also in the pipeline is the publication of a recipe book and a wine guide, international promotional activities and a digital marketing campaign.
