Despite very poor weather, a number of Father Christmases took part in the Swim for Shoes charitable initiative at the Holiday Inn Algarve in Armação de Pêra on Christmas Day and helped raise more than €700 to buy new shoes for children in an Algarve orphanage.

This year it was a swim with a difference - due to the sea conditions on Christmas morning, it was decided that the dip should be in the Holiday Inn Algarve's outdoor swimming pool, which was much warmer than the sea.

Certificates were awarded to those who got wet and everyone enjoyed a welcome glass of hot chocolate and Brandy wine in the hotel bar afterwards.

In order to raise more funds, another ‘Swim for Shoes’ is taking place on January 1 at 11am. “Just the way to recover from the festivities of New Year's Eve,” say organisers. “Welcome in 2014 by paddling or swimming in the Atlantic Ocean! Please join us - pyjamas optional!”
