He may have skipped the country in a private jet (click here) but Portuguese authorities are now apparently out to get former Benfica boss João Vale de Azevedo and see him returned to this country for a new 10-year stint behind bars.

A story in tabloid Correio da Manhã today says a European arrest warrant has been issued and the matter now “awaits the decision of the British authorities”.

Vale e Azevedo, who spent four years fighting a previous arrest warrant before returning to serve jail time for various frauds, is currently living in a central London apartment, overlooking the Thames.

Much has been made of the ‘luxury’ evident in his lifestyle although he has claimed to be bankrupt and living on less than the minimum wage.

The jail sentence that awaits him refers to his condemnation for having appropriated “millions of euros” in transfers paid for various top players.
