Children across the Algarve will be returning to school this September but many without the essentials to learn. Families on low or no income are entitled to subsidies for textbooks but the parents still struggle to buy basics such as backpacks, exercise books and other school stationery.

Thus Algarve children's charity ACCA has teamed up with Castelo dos Sonhos to provide backpacks filled with essentials to underprivileged children. Just last year 600 backpacks were donated.

The appeal is again for a donation of €5 (or more) to buy either a good backpack or gym bag and 10 exercise books. The backpacks are purchased from a wholesale from a Portuguese supplier and the exercise books need to be the basic black-covered ones available in the supermarkets for around €0.50 each.

The children are identified by community centres and schools that know where the more urgent cases can be found.

Each child needs to put in their backpack all types of school essentials, such as exercise books, pens and pencils, rulers and rubbers, files and folders, calculators, and more.

“Although it is tempting to buy beautiful school goodies, please do not be tempted as we need to help as many children as possible. Please keep it simple and buy black-covered exercise books and simple files,” said Gwenda Daud. “Your donations are vital, both monetary and material, and we ask that they arrive by September 6. This way we can identify where the shortfalls lie and buy the rest of the equipment before term starts.”

Donations can be left at these drop-off points: Castelo de Sonhos, Silves; Holiday Inn Algarve, Armação de Pêra; The Golf Shack, on EN125 between Porches and Alcantarilha; Casa Curiosa, on EN125 between Almancil and Faro; Lewis Andrews, opposite Apolónia, Almancil; and Farmácia Nobre Passos, Almancil.
