A group of doctors, nurses and patients have launched an appeal to the government defending the legalisation of cannabis for use in the treatment of various debilitating illnesses.

An open letter signed by more than 100 personalities cites scientific evidence proving the benefits of the plant and goes on to highlight the hypocrisy of Portugal in licensing plantations for medicinal cannabis which then export their products without being able to sell them here.

The bid has already received the thumbs up from former president Jorge Sampaio, the ‘Ordem dos Médicos’ doctors association and aspirant PSD leader Rui Rio (while fellow contender Pedro Santana Lopes is against) - and is two “projectos de lei” presented by Bloco de Esquerda and PAN (Peoples Animals Nature party) are being debated in parliament today.

According to Sol, the issue is “in the hands of the PCP communists and Greens”, bearing in mind that the PS is allowing a free vote, while the centre right (PSD and CDS) are against.

As we right, all signs point to the legalisation getting a go-ahead, but under very strict parameters.
