A while ago I wrote about the 2012 Vida Nova Reserva from Cliff Richard’s winery here in the Algarve and I was very impressed, hence my article “Still not convinced about Algarve wine?” published earlier this year in this newspaper. And just recently, I found out that the very same wine has been awarded a whopping 91 points by Decanter magazine (August 2017 edition).

We need to put this into perspective in two ways: first of all, it is a great achievement for the team at Adega do Cantor. This wine was singled out by Decanter magazine to be included in an article about “celebrity vintners” around the world and what is most impressive is that Vida Nova Reserva scored higher than many of the other 10 wines featured. For example, Erne Els’s Signature Blend from South Africa scored a still respectable 89 points, but it retails for nearly three times the price of Vida Nova Reserva in the UK.

But on the other hand, we should also consider the fact that the wine would probably never have been included in a Decanter magazine tasting were it not for the celebrity connection. Today there are many excellent wines produced here in the Algarve and Vida Nova Reserva is but one of them, however, this is only the second time an Algarve wine has been tasted and rated by Decanter. So, hopefully, this unexpectedly high score will serve as recognition, not only for the producer in question, but for the whole of the Algarve as an up-and-coming wine region. Still not convinced? Pick up a bottle of the 2012 Reserva before it sells out – €11.95 at Apolónia.
