The final humiliation for the Civil Protection boss who resigned after the wildfire tragedy of Pedrógão Grande last summer came this week as Rui Esteves was stripped of the degree he claimed to have which qualified him for the post in the first place.

The situation is now in the hands of the Public Ministry which will annul all previously declared “equivalences” that justified the degree, say reports.

The situation of top brass and university degrees is a sore point in Portuguese political circles.

People still remember the ‘bogus degree’ of a former right hand man to prime minister José Sócrates - and there was bitter speculation over Sócrates’ own qualifications which again, appeared to have been over-egged.

Years of toing and froing finally saw the order of engineers confirm last year that the man now the centre of a major investigation into alleged institutional corruption was not, and never has been one of its members and as such cannot call himself an engineer.

Today, Jornal de Notícias concludes that besides Rui Esteves, “suspicions have been raised over irregularities in the degrees of other commanders in the ANPC” (Civil Protection authority).
