Expresso headlines the news: “Pollution costs more than €5 billion in taxes”, but the truth is there’s money in environmental conservation, and it is rolling into State coffers at a rate unseen for decades. 2017 was the fifth consecutive year that environmental taxes brought in more money than before - now representing 7.6% of all taxes and contributions charged in Portugal. The major contribution comes from oil and energy companies.
