Farense celebrate their goal after just six minutes
Neca (black/white) in action against Mafra

There was heartbreak for SC Farense as they succumbed to a stoppage time goal by CD Mafra in the Campeonato de Portugal Final at the Estádio Nacional do Jamor last Sunday.

Both teams had already gained promotion to the professional Segunda Liga, but the icing on the cake would be to lift the championship trophy.

Farense got off to a perfect start as Fábio Gomes slotted home the all-important first goal after just six minutes. Despite pressing for a second decisive goal, the Faro-based outfit failed to capitalise on their superiority.

Mafra levelled matters midway through the second-half as substitute Ricardo Rodrigues found the back of the net. With extra-time looming on the horizon, Mafra bagged the winner deep into stoppage time through Juary Soares.

Farense fans also said farewell to Neca who retired after the game. The 38-year-old midfield dynamo made 120 appearances for Farense having previously started his career at Belenenses (Lisbon). Neca gained two senior caps with Portugal in 2002 and also had a spell abroad turning out for Turkish teams Konyaspor and Ankaraspor.
