Cockles are all you will want to eat at Figueira’s ‘Festival do Berbigão’ which will take place in the small village outside of Portimão on the weekend of September 8 and 9.

Held every year at the village’s sports centre, the festival welcomes thousands of seafood lovers keen to taste the many different cockle dishes that are served, from cockle rice and pasta to ‘rissóis de berbigão’ (cockles coated in fried breadcrumbs).

Visitors can also enjoy the original cockle recipe in which the shellfish is cooked simply with olive oil, garlic and coriander.

As in previous years, organisers want to make sure no one will go hungry and so two tons of cockles will be cooked at the event.

Figueira is a small village that borders the EN125 road and has strong links to the Ria de Alvor shellfishing industry.

Organised by the local Sociedade Recreativa Figueirense, the event will take place from 7pm to 1am and will also feature musical entertainment. Admission is €3 and includes a complimentary plate of cockles.
