A 65-year-old fisherman is reported to be seriously injured in an induced coma following a disastrous end to a pursuit across Ria Formosa by Maritime Police.

According to reports, the man and his 40-year-old son were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Another small boat, spied fishing illegally in the lagoon, had set off at high speed after police tried to approach it.

Said Maritime police commander Nuno Filipe Cortes Lopes the men in the boat had “instantly cut their nets and scarpered.

“We tried to pursue this small boat”, he continued, but the situation became complicated when both boats bore down on the little fishing boat carrying the father and son.

In the confusion the “infracting boat” got away, while Maritime Police rammed the other, with tragic consequences.

“The son was always all right”, said Cortes Lopes, “apart from both people having entered into hypothermia.

“The other person was unconscious, and right now the situation is this. We have to really hope the person in induced coma recovers”.

As reports confirm, there will now be an inquiry into how what should have been a routine police patrol could have spiralled so disastrously out of control.

Lusa reports that the fisherman’s prognosis remains reserved, while his family is receiving psychological support, as are the two agents who were in the police boat.

As for the “illegal boat” that instigated the whole incident , SIC television news says it “has not been found”.
