Olhanense travelled north to the Évora district to take on Estrela FC knowing that victory was imperative in their quest to finish in the top two.

On a lush green pitch, which deceptively hid the dips and bumps that made it difficult to play controlled football, it was the home side who should have been out of sight by half-time.

With four new players in their starting line-up, they were looking to pull themselves away from the relegation zone. On three occasions, lack of composure in front of goal cost them dearly and even the crossbar came to the visitors’ rescue.

Five minutes after the break and Estrela were down to 10 men when Rui Pereira picked up a second yellow but, three minutes later, the home side took the lead when Canina was left completely unmarked in front of goal.

Olhanense were misfiring on all cylinders as passes continued to go astray but that was all to change midway through the second-half.

Centre-forward Ruben Fidalgo latched on to a loose ball inside the six-yard box to level the score and, two minutes later, Rodrigo Parreira weaved through the Estrela defence before poking the ball past keeper Diogo Ferreira.

The home side had a great chance to draw level when Luís Bicho was clear through, but Cléber Santana had little trouble in smothering the weak shot. In stoppage time, Ruben Fidalgo added a third to double his tally for the season.

Olhanense are still eight points off top spot but, more importantly, are now just a point behind Pinhalnovense and Casa Pia.

On Sunday, Olhanense make the short trip to the Estádio Municipal de Almancil to play Almancilense who have failed to win in their last five games with their last victory being in mid-November. Kick-off is 3pm.
