Faro’s Forum Algarve shopping centre has finally opened its new ‘pet-friendly area’.

The inauguration was originally scheduled for July 22 but was postponed to last Saturday (August 19), which marked International Homeless Animals Day.

Located outside the shopping centre’s main entrance, the pet-friendly area is open to dogs of any breed or size.

But it is not a place where owners can simply “dump” their pets. It has a strict set of rules, Forum Algarve’s manager Sérgio Santos told Barlavento newspaper.

Equipped with a “leisure area and a WC”, it also provides owners with leashes and muzzles if needed.

According to Santos, Forum Algarve is “the first shopping centre in Portugal and possibly the whole of Europe” to boast a “totally pet-friendly area”.

He also revealed that several outdoor sections of Forum Algarve as well as many stores already welcome pets.

Meantime, the mall is preparing to unveil six new restaurants in September – Talho Burger, Walk to Wok, Hanami Sushi, NATA Lisboa, Sr Frango da Guia and Don Costini.

Santos says other novelties are in the pipeline and, although it’s still early days, Forum Algarve will once again boast a wealth of Christmas entertainment.
