The HPA private hospital group will offer free screenings next month to patients who have undergone knee and hip replacements over five years ago and are not receiving any follow-up medical care.

The screenings will take place on Saturday, March 3 at HPA’s Alvor (Portimão) and Gambelas (Faro) hospitals.

It is the first time an initiative of this kind is being held in Portugal, the group says.

“Patients with hip and knee prostheses should undergo periodic screenings, with a clinical and radiologic assessment, in order to promote the early detection and treatment of complications and avoid having to undergo difficult surgeries,” said Dr João Paulo Sousa of the HPA group.

He added that over 5,000 knee and hip replacements are believed to have taken place in the last 15 years in the Algarve, and most of these patients are not being followed up by a doctor.

The screenings will involve two radiographs, a consultation with a physiotherapist and an appointment with two orthopedists. They can be booked over the phone.
