Nationals are told they can travel anywhere in Europe on them, but German authorities are not impressed. They say the fact that Portugal’s ‘cartão de cidadão’ does not specify a date of emission or an address means that it cannot be used for the purposes of opening a bank account/ picking up a parcel/ even booking an airline ticket. Thus nationals are “forced to request additional documents” which “cost money”.

The problem is doubly frustrating for the time Portuguese authorities appear to be taking in not sorting it out, say reports.

Portugal’s ambassador in Berlin João Mira Gomes told TSF radio six weeks ago that moves were underway to make sure Portuguese ID cards were accepted.

But despite the fact that even MEPs are now involved, nothing has changed.
