Thursday, January 19 sees the opening of the Algarve’s first herbal medicine clinic.

Situated on the Reserva da Luz development just outside Praia da Luz on the road to Burgau, the new space is run by British herbalist and long-term Algarve resident Poppy Burr BSc MCPP and will be offering consultations and treatment in modern herbal medicine.

Poppy explains this is “basically the opposite of homeopathy. Herbalists are often confused with homeopaths, but the big difference is that we prescribe whole plant extracts, while homeopaths use specifically-formulated dilutions. To a herbalist, stronger often means better; to a homeopath, the opposite applies”.

An initial consultation at the clinic can last up to two hours, covering patient’s medical history, diet and lifestyle habits in great detail. This is the ‘holistic’ approach, designed to “get the ‘whole’ picture, and treat the whole person, not just the disease.”

Plant medicine is then prescribed accordingly, usually in the form of tinctures, teas, powders and creams.

To find out more, next Thursday’s open day is open to everyone. There will be herbal tonic on offer, teas and “a few canapés”. Doors will be open from 3pm to 6pm, and there will be a discount offer for consultations booked on the day for new patients.
