Three tourists and a boatmaster were rescued after a tourist boat sunk inside a cave at Marinha beach in Lagoa.

The boat capsized when it was hit by a wave on Friday morning (May 11), leaving three holidaymakers (two British, 35 and 46, and one Japanese, 26) and the Portuguese boatmaster, 29, awaiting rescue while the boat sunk.

They were able to swim to a nearby patch of sand inside the cave while maritime rescue services arrived.

No one was seriously hurt although the boatmaster suffered a few scratches while trying to save the boat. They were all taken to Portimão Hospital as a precaution.

Rescue operations involved maritime police, the Ferragudo maritime rescue station, the Navy and a small boat from a local boat trip company to access the grotto.

A plan is now in place to remove the sunken boat from the cave.
