Hostels that have been setting up and running under the simplified AL (alojamento local) regime could soon see rules and regulations tightening.

Said secretary of state for housing Ana Pinho the plan is to bring the treatment of hostels “closer to that demanded of hotels”.

The idea has emerged from the parliamentary working group reviewing AL legislation.

It won’t affect hostels that have already started, say reports. But if these hostels sell to third parties, those buyers would face the legal changes.

The story appeared in Diário de Notícias online in the early hours of this morning, suggesting Ana Pinho is due to make a full statement on June 26.
