Maritime tourism company Passeios Ria Formosa is enjoying newfound success by renting houseboats, which provide "as much comfort as a room at a local luxury hotel". This type of accommodation is aimed at holidaymakers who want to enjoy some time off in the Algarve but are looking for a more nature-oriented option.

Passeios Ria Formosa owns two houseboats, which are based in Barra Velha, Ria Formosa, in the middle of “one of the most beautiful landscapes of the Eastern Algarve and one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal”.

Ricardo Badálo, the company’s 31-year-old owner, told Barlavento newspaper that the latest boat to join the fleet, representing a €150,000 investment, features a suite, fully-equipped kitchen, dining room, panoramic lounge and a terrace that is “perfect for sun-bathing.”

It does not have a TV or Wi-Fi in order to allow guests to feel truly at one with nature.

Though the boats are stationary, the company provides a boat taxi service as well as rowboats to reach the nearby beaches.

The houseboats can be rented from April to the end of November, costing €400 per night.

Badálo says that many people like to book a houseboat for the final days of their holiday.

“Some people stay a few days at traditional hotels and then spend the last two or three days with us, to diversify their experience in the Algarve,” said the company owner, adding that he would like to purchase at least three more houseboats in the next five years as he sees great potential in this niche.

Passeios Ria Formosa is based in Fuseta, Olhão and offers other sea-related experiences, such as boat trips along the estuary, dolphin-watching, water sports, dinners for two on desert beaches and snorkelling.
