Swedish furniture giant IKEA plans to completely do away with all disposable plastic products at its stores by January 2020.

Products like plastic straws, plates, cups, bags and many others that are only used once and then thrown out will be progressively replaced in the next year-and-a-half at the 363 stores the company owns in 29 countries, including Portugal.

“We want to continue working with our suppliers and challenge them to adopt more sustainable practices in order to continue developing our range of products with the guarantee that all materials can be used again or are recyclable,” said Cláudia Domingues, head of communications and sustainability at IKEA Portugal.

According to the company, 98% of the packaging used for IKEA products is made from renewable, recyclable or recycled materials.
