Portuguese football manager José Mourinho has put an end to speculation that he would be returning to Portugal to coach Benfica, the club where he started his career.

Speaking to CMTV on Thursday, the former manager of Manchester United guaranteed he has not been contacted by the club and also has no intention of returning to Portuguese football any time soon.

"I do not like feeding news stories, but I have no intention of working in Portugal," he said.

"The best way to respect a great club [Benfica] and a great president is to say that I was not approached,” the 55-year-old said, adding that it is always an “honour to return to a club where you’ve been” but assuring that Benfica won’t be his next club.

"I'm not training, I love that I am not talked about all the time and the best way to ensure that remains the case is for me to not talk either,” he added.

José Mourinho was sacked from Manchester United last month after a disappointing start to the Premier League which left the Red Devils virtually out of the title race.

The rumours that he could return to Benfica surfaced after the Eagles were left coachless when Rui Vitória decided to resign following a loss against Algarve club Portimonense.
