Around 50,000 people visited Lagoa’s candlelit market ‘Mercado de Culturas... à Luz das Velas’ which was held in the town centre between July 5 and 8.

For four nights the streets of Lagoa filled up with scores of people who wanted to take in the rhythmic music and beauty of the candle displays the event has become famous for.

The streets were decorated with thousands of candles which depicted over 40 ethnic and religious African symbols. There were also be concerts, dance performances, food, stalls manned by around 60 craftspeople and art exhibitions themed around Africa.

The list of musical performers included Kilema (Madagascar), Muhsilwan (Sudan, Morocco and Guinea), Aboubacar Sylla & Doudou Ngm (Guinea and Senegal), Yeliké & Gassim Camara (Guinea), Zé Manel Martins Quarteto (Angola) and Cherif Bacisko (Guinea-Bissau) and Adinkraene.

Given its huge success, organisers have confirmed that the event is returning next year between July 4 and 7 and will be themed around the Mediterranean.
