The towns of Lagos and Olhão are to start operating their own municipal police forces from 2019.

In the case of Lagos where locals have been pushing for more police presence, the force will involve a complement of 26 agents and operate from the town hall seven days a week, from 8am to midnight, to be extended to 4am during the high season (end March to end October).

Olhão’s town police will involve a service of 12 agents, say reports.

Up till now Albufeira has been the only town to run its own municipal police force.
