The 8th Congress of Portuguese Lawyers starts today (tomorrow) amid huge controversy. At issue is not only the way delegates were chosen for participation in debates, but the controversial subject matter.

Perhaps the most radical proposal is to ban lawyers from practising who don’t clear €2,900 per month.

The move is designed to “recuperate prestige” of a profession that has become degraded.

Its author Pedro Alhinho - a former member of the Superior Council of the Bar Association - talks of “an authentic proletarianisation of the activity”, suggesting hundreds of the nation’s lawyers are, certainly in his opinion, not up to scratch.

Alhinho’s proposal has already seen an online petition slam the idea as “scandalous” and “unconstitutional” and demand its withdrawal forthwith.
