After 22 years in the same spot, Lidl supermarket has now inaugurated its new premises in Silves.

The new supermarket is located in one of the town’s historic buildings near the riverside, which used to be home to the Salvador Gomes Vilarinho cork factory and later to the local firefighters but has been abandoned for years.

The opening ceremony was held on Thursday, August 23 and was attended by Silves mayor Rosa Palma and the commander of the local firefighters António Domingos.

In a bid to help the local firefighters after this month’s devastating wildfires in Monchique, Silves and Portimão, the supermarket will donate an air compressor, a washing machine and an electric dryer to the local fire station.

Lidl has a long history in Silves, where it has opened one of its first supermarkets in the region 22 years ago. The new 1,400sqm supermarket has nearly double the space of the old premises and boasts a new self-service bakery and a larger area for fresh and frozen products.

It is also more environmentally-friendly, with low energy consumption equipment and LED lighting.

The supermarket is located at the corner of Avenida Marginal and Rua Cruz da Palmeira and is open every day from 8am to 10pm. There is a car park with 116 spaces.
