Residents of Culatra Island and Olhão paid homage to their patron saint Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes (Our Lady of Navigators) last weekend in an annual procession which this year had Minister of the sea Ana Paula Vitorino as its guest of honour.

The procession sees several statues of the patron saint taken aboard boats to make the journey from the town to Culatra. It then continues throughout the village’s streets.
The event, organised by Clube União Culatrense, also features musical performances, dances (‘bailes’), traditional games and sports competitions.

It is held on the first Sunday of every August.
