Last week café Pastelaria Arade in Portimão hosted the successful opening of an art exhibition for artists David Trubshaw and Gudrun Bartels. The exhibition is open for the whole of November and customers to the café can partake in some traditional Algarvian pastries while admiring original works by these talented artists.

Every month for the last two years, Pedro and Patrícia Carvalho have invited artists to exhibit their work in the café, to give artists an opportunity to showcase their art whilst at the same time filling the café´s walls with an ever-changing art display.

David lives in the Algarve and loves to paint trees and is inspired by their shapes and leaves and how they move and feature in the local landscape. He works mostly with acrylics, pastels and charcoal but now also designs his own hand-made prints with oil and mixed media. David also writes Haiku poetry and has produced a beautifully illustrated book ‘Haiku for You – A Celebration of the Four Seasons’ with some of his paintings and poetry.

Gudrun lives in Germany but visits the Algarve regularly. She works with acrylics combined with pastel chalks and different materials to produce her impressions of scenery based on Portugal’s inspiring culture and nature. She also makes captivating colourful detailed collages. Visit www.gudrun-bartels.de to see her amazing work.

Both David and Gudrun, via the Silves Rotary Club, run the School Art Projects workshops in Algarvean schools and have produced a book of the children’s poems and art to raise funds for a children’s sensory room in Casa do Povo in Messines to help children with learning, mobility and communication difficulties.

Both books would make a lovely Christmas present and can be ordered through David’s website www.davidmtrubshaw.eu or by email at davidmtrubshaw@hotmail.com
