A number of guests were recently invited to the preview of a new saddlery shop being established at Quinta Penedo stables in Vale Fuzeiros, São Bartolomeu de Messines. Owner Sasha Yates saw the need for a shop in the area as horse owners usually have to travel to Portimão or Loulé for their equipment.

The shop will be selling tackle as well as equestrian clothing with the profits being used to pay for the care and rehabilitation of the many dogs Sasha helps to rescue and rehome each year. The shop has a second-hand section whereby all funds raised from the sales will be divided between several animal charities; initially those charities currently dealing with the animals hurt or left without food and housing from the terrible fires in the north of Portugal.

Sasha recently donated over €3,000 worth of hay to help feed the livestock whose pastures have been destroyed.

Quinta Penedo has set up a Facebook page called ‘Portugal Animal Fires Emergency’ which already has over 3,000 likes. The page has been set up to help the animals from communities destroyed by the fires.

Close to Sasha’s heart is the rescue of dogs. With plenty of room around Quinta Penedo farm, Sasha started to take on dogs from the Canil de Portimão that no-one else wanted. Friends of the Canil de Portimão, a charity set up in 2011 by Patricia Nieuwe, works closely with Sasha and will be one of the local charities to benefit from funds raised from the sale of the second-hand equipment. The charity has already built two catteries and various kennels within the canil to improve conditions and have ongoing costs for medication, food and foster care for the many abandoned dogs of Portimão.

Sasha’s aim is for the Quinta Penedo shops to provide a place where local artisans and craft makers can also sell their home-made goods. “We have the space to help and so we want to give back to our local community,” she said.
