No-one seems to know why, but the number of women arrested on suspicion of having committed arson in Portugal during this terrible year for wildfires has quadrupled on figures for 2016.

Women do not traditionally fit the profile of fire-raisers - more usually middle-aged low income, low achieving males.

In total, Judicial Police have “identified and detained” 52 people on suspicion of having started forest fires this year.

Público stresses that at the same time last year, the same police force had only identified and detained 21 people.
