It is described as “the biggest gastronomic event in the south of Portugal” and is expected to bring tens of thousands of seafood lovers to Olhão between August 10 and 15.

The local seafood festival (Festival do Marisco) is one of the highlights of the Algarve’s summer events calendar, having gained huge popularity thanks to its mix of delicious, fresh seafood and shellfish and top-notch musical line-up featuring several of Portugal’s most famous artists and bands.

The event will be officially inaugurated on Friday, August 10 at 6pm by Portugal’s Sea Minister Ana Paula Vitorino.

Food-wise, visitors will be able to taste mouthwatering seafood from grilled shrimp, crab and lobster to oysters and clams. There will also be other delicious dishes to enjoy, such as the hugely popular seafood rice (arroz de marisco) or even Spain’s paella.

Tables and benches will be spread out around Olhão’s Jardim Pescador Olhanense so that festival-goers can enjoy their meal.

The vast musical programme features young pop sensation Agir (August 10), singer-songwriter Pedro Abrunhosa (August 11), fado singer Ana Moura (August 12), Brazilian artist Vanessa da Mata (August 13), African group Calema and, last but not least, Portugal’s biggest rock band Xutos e Pontapés (August 15).

Daily tickets cost €7 for the first three days of the event and €9 for the final three. Children aged six to 12 only pay half price while admission is free for children aged six and under.

There are also ‘festival tickets’ granting access to all six days which cost €42 for adults and €18 for children.
