Even those who “insist on staying in the interior” regions of Portugal may find they are squeezed out by dint of the migration of young people which “places seriously challenges on the guarantee of quality of life”.
These are the conclusions of a study which reveals that 28% of jobs in the country’s interior regions are at risk of not being filled unless government policies (and levels of support) change.

Said researcher Teresa Sá Marques, running the national programme for territorial planning: “We gave to know how to construct the future with less people and create a development discourse with other resources”.

These could include increasing support for business projects that promote “quality employment, especially in the area of reconciling work and private life, and promoting equal opportunities”.

Plans would have to include the hiring of young workers, to stem the flow of young people towards the coast.
