Portimão has unveiled a vast entertainment programme described as “25 days of Christmas magic” including the arrival of Santa Claus, a Christmas fair, a life-size nativity scene, musical performances and a festive-themed skydiving event.

The highlight will be the arrival of Santa Claus at the Alameda square on Friday, December 15 at 4pm. The jolly gift-bearer will be arriving alongside Mother Christmas and his helping elves at the square where the town’s Christmas fair will also be taking place.

Visitors will be able to shop for presents at the fair, which will boast several stalls manned by local producers and artisans as well as a “magic carrousel” and ‘Casa do Pai Natal’ (Santa’s House).

The fair will be open between 11am and 8pm from Sunday to Thursday and between 10.30am and 10pm on Friday and Saturday until December 23.

Another highlight will be the life-size nativity scene which is already on display at Largo da Mó on the so-called ‘Rua das Lojas’. Portimão church will also be showcasing its own nativity scene between December 18 and January 6.

Music-wise, several local groups will be performing Christmas concerts throughout the town. The Grupo Coral de Portimão will perform on Tuesday, December 12 at Casa Manuel Teixeira Gomes at 7pm while the Institute of Culture of Portimão will host its own Christmas show at the same venue on December 22 at 6.30pm.

Alvor will also be holding its own Christmas fair near the village’s church on Saturday, December 16 and Sunday, December 17 between 10am and 7pm. The fair will also feature the arrival of Santa Claus, a series of musical performances and also a Christmas-themed showcooking event.

Finally, the municipality’s aerodrome in Montes de Alvor will host a skydiving festival entitled ‘Xmas Boogie’ between December 22 and January 5 expected to attract around 400 skydivers from all over the world.
