Portugal has been named both the ‘World and Europe’s Best Golf Destination’ for the fourth year in a row at the World Golf Awards, considered the ‘Oscars’ of the golf industry.

The Algarve has also come away a winner from the event, with Quinta do Lago-Sul being voted ‘Portugal’s Best Golf Course’ and Hilton Vilamoura As Cascatas Golf Resort & Spa ‘Portugal’s Best Golf Hotel’.

West Cliffs Golf Links, located just north of Lisbon, was also named the ‘World’s Best New Golf Course’.

“It is with great satisfaction that we see Portugal named both the World and Europe’s Best Golf Destination and the Algarve being acknowledged for its excellent conditions,” said Algarve tourism boss Desidério Silva.

He added: “Besides offering an integrated tourism experience, the Algarveans’ unique hospitality and a year-round mild climate, the region also boasts Portugal’s best golf course and hotel.”

The Algarve’s golf sector has been growing steadily for years. In 2016, a record 1.3 million rounds were played, 10.5% more than the year before.

Says the regional tourism board, the Algarve’s 40 golf courses and many hotels make it a top destination for golfers from all over the world.

According to its website, the World Golf Awards aim to “celebrate and reward excellence in golf tourism”.
