Portugal continues to establish itself as an elite destination for international business events.

This year’s ranking published by the International Congress & Convention Association (ICCA) shows that Portugal made the world’s top 10 in 2016, jumping from 12th to 10th place.

Portugal hosted 287 “association meetings” last year, the same as Canada and more than Austria, South Korea, Sweden, Brazil and Australia.

Nearly half of these were held in Lisbon, placed ninth in the global city ranking. Porto, Cascais, Coimbra, Guimarães, Braga and Aveiro also held at least five events each.

But as ICCA points out, the findings should not be “mistakenly perceived as the destination rankings for the meetings industry as a whole”.

“To be included, meetings must be organised by associations, must be held on a regular basis, have at least 50 delegates, and rotate between at least three countries,” said the association.
