“2017 was a great year for the Portuguese wine industry, with top producers winning a number of international awards and able to sell out their wines soon after release. But despite winemakers being busier than ever, many had still made the time to present their wines to the Algarve Wine Society (AWS), either at events held in the Algarve or when groups of members visited the wine regions lying to the north.”

AWS president Gaynor Stapleton was addressing members at the society’s AGM held on February 27 at the Hotel Pestana Vila Sol, Vilamoura. She thanked committee members for their hard work in organising events and trips throughout 2017. Secretary Nigel Adams noted that the society’s membership has grown over the last year, with a welcome increasing diversity in national origins.

With the AGM concluded, 70 members moved to the serious business of the evening and enjoyed a five-course menu featuring veal carpaccio, sea bass and carré of lamb, accompanied by a Spanish verdejo from near Vallodolid in Spain and an award-winning Portuguese wine, Quinta da Falorca Reserva Lagar 2011, rated 95 points by top wine critic Robert Parker.

The AWS’s next event is a day trip to Quinta do Quetzal near Vidigueira on March 21.
