A 32-year-old female prison guard has been killed today during a training course taking place at the shooting range in Paços de Ferreira.

The woman, a guard from Santa Cruz do Bispo’s jail (also for women) was hit in the chest by a bullet fired by one of the instructors.

Reports have not fully explained how the shot came to be fired “while the woman received training” around 11am, but death was declared on the spot - despite strenuous efforts of INEM medical response personnel to save her.

In a statement lamenting the tragedy, the general directorate of prison services said that “in line with legal requirements, GNR police were called to the scene and communicated the occurrence to the Judicial Police.

“Internal investigations are also in progress to determine the causes of this accident, and an investigation has been opened, to be carried out by the coordinating inspector of the Audit and Inspection Service (North) who is a Public Prosecutor”.

Condolences have been passed to the dead woman’s family, the statement concluded, reiterating the prison services’ “profound regret” over what happened.

The question, nonetheless, on commentators’ minds is why was live ammunition being used during a training exercise.

Said one reader responding to the story online: “Training using real bullets? That’s not training that’s gross negligence!”

Tabloid Correio da Manhã has identified the dead woman as Carla Amorim from Baião.
