Quinta dos Vales is the grand winner of the Algarve wine competition organised by the region’s wine commission (CVA), having won the ‘Best Wine in the Algarve’ accolade with its Marquês dos Vales Grace Vineyard red 2012 while also receiving the most medals out of any other winery in the region.

The event took place on May 7 at the Mascarenhas Gregório theatre in Silves after a wine “symposium” in which several regional and national representatives of the wine sector gathered to share knowledge.

In all, 27 wines received medals in the competition. Only gold and silver medals were attributed to the wines, given the high scores that the wines received.

The jury highlighted the “excellent quality of the wines” as well as the “care that went into the appealing labels”.

The symposium was also considered a success, having given wine representatives the opportunity to discuss topics such as wine tourism, promotion and marketing.

Data presented by Maria João Dias from the Portuguese Institute of Wine and Vines (IVV) also shows that the sales of Algarve wines have increased 50% in the first three months of 2018 compared to the same period last year.

She added that the increase is even more significant when set against a national decrease of 0.4% in wine sales.
