Applications are already being accepted for the final stage of Rota do Petisco, the Algarve’s summer gastronomic event taking place between September 9 and October 15 in Portimão, Lagoa, Monchique and Silves.

The event, also dubbed ‘Terras do Arade’ - to differentiate it from the ‘Terras do Infante’ leg of the Rota which is taking place further west and in the east - is also hoping to attract regional businesses in the form of a smaller ‘Rota do Comércio’ (Business Route).

Rota do Petisco is currently taking place in Lagos, Vila do Bispo and Aljezur where it will remain until Sunday (June 11), and in Faro and Olhão where it continues until July 9.

Organised by Portimão association Teia D’Impulsos, the Rota initiative involves restaurants offering typically Algarvean ‘nibbles’ at reduced prices.

People buy a 'passport' – which is a guide to the venues and their menus – and can enjoy ‘petiscos’ (tapas) accompanied by a drink for €3. Local sweets and desserts can also be tasted for €2.

One euro of the passport’s price goes to help local charities and institutions.

Last year a total of 250 restaurants in six boroughs took part, selling an impressive €700,000-worth of menus.
