Frustrated Ryanair cabin crew have finally set a date for the “Europe-wide” strike threatened for this summer: Wednesday July 25 and Thursday July 26.

The strike will cover Portugal, Italy, Spain and Belgium in a concerted attempt to stop Ryanair substituting striking workers with colleagues from different countries.

This is a dispute that goes back months, and involves multiple issues where syndicates say they feel oppressed and under-valued (click here).

Ryanair has previously said it will not be reimbursing passengers for any flight cancellations due to strike action.

The low-cost Irish airline with a reputation for changing passenger flight plans at the 11th hour is beset with union issues right now: on Thursday next week in Ireland it faces a strike by pilots, also upset over working conditions.

At last count - according to Portuguese press reports - Ryanair has already cancelled 1,100 flights this month - affecting 210,000 passengers - due not only to strikes, but “the lack of air traffic controllers”.
